Pen and Paper Solo RPG Notes, Saved Digitally: Photos, Scans and Reusable Notebooks

You do not have to choose between a notebook and a backup. Here are three ways to keep pen and paper and still have your story saved.

Why keep pen and paper at all

Most solo players start in a notebook for a reason. Writing by hand slows you down enough to notice what you are inventing, a map sketched in pencil feels like treasure, and nobody gets notifications in the middle of a dungeon. Digital notes win on search, backup and sharing. You can have both, and the combination is simpler than it sounds.

Three ways to bring paper notes into the digital world

  1. Photograph the page. Your phone camera is free and quick. Name the file with the date and the character, and store it with your other notes. It does not need any special paper.
  2. Use a scanning app. Many free apps straighten a photographed page, clean up the contrast and turn it into a PDF. This gives you tidier pages than a plain photo.
  3. Use reusable notebooks. Some notebooks are made so you can write, scan the page into an app, and then wipe it clean and write again. We cover one popular example below.

How a reusable notebook works

Reusable notebooks like Rocketbook use special pages. According to the product listing, you write with the included Pilot Frixion pen, scan each page with the app, send it to a cloud service you choose, and then erase the page with a damp cloth. The listing also describes grid-layout pages with titles and tags that help the app name and organise your scans. The same notebook can be used over and over, so it produces much less paper waste than a notebook you fill and shelve. Check the current product page for exactly what is included, because details can change.

Where the free tools fit

Whichever way you save, keep rolling dice with the dice roller, ask the oracle your questions and copy a few lines from a journal prompt onto your page. The tools on this site are made to feed your notes, not replace them. If you are starting from nothing, read the starter kit or the fifteen minute first session.
