How to write a roll
The Roll animation switch makes the dice tumble for about half a second before they settle on the result, with the total shown only once they stop. Turn it off for instant results. It starts off if your device asks for reduced motion, and big rolls of more than 30 dice are never animated so your browser stays fast.
Write a roll the way most tabletop players do. 2d6+3 rolls two six-sided dice and adds three. You can combine parts, as in d8+d6+2, and subtract with a minus sign. Tap the dice buttons to build a formula without typing, then press Roll, or press Enter.
- d20, 3d8, d100: roll that many dice with that many sides. d% is the same as d100.
- 4d6dl1 or 4d6kh3: drop the lowest die, or keep the highest three. kl keeps the lowest and dh drops the highest.
- 2d20kh1 and 2d20kl1: advantage and disadvantage. The Advantage and Disadvantage buttons add these for you.
- 3d6!: exploding dice. A die showing its highest number rolls again and adds to the total. d6!5 explodes on a 5 or 6.
- 3d8r2: reroll any die showing 2 or less, once.
- 6d10t8: a dice pool. Count how many dice show 8 or more. The total is the number of successes.
- 4dF: fudge dice, each showing minus, blank or plus, for a total from -4 to +4.
- d66: roll two six-sided dice and read them as tens and units, giving 11 to 66. Handy for tables.
Modifiers: formula or switches
There are two ways to add a bonus. Put it in the formula, as in d20+5, when it belongs to one particular roll. Or add a named modifier, like +2 Flanking or -1 Tired, when it is a standing bonus or penalty. Modifiers stack, you switch each one on or off with a tap, and everything switched on is added to every roll and listed on its own line so you can see where the total came from. Your modifiers are saved in this browser and included when you export dice data.
Why use it for solo play
In solo play you are your own game master, so you roll often and you need to remember what happened. This roller shows every die, marks which dice were dropped or exploded, flags a natural 20 or natural 1 on a single d20, and keeps your last fifty rolls so you can write them into your journal. Save the rolls you use all the time, like a sword attack or a random encounter check, and roll them with one tap. Results come from your browser's secure random number generator, and nothing about your rolls leaves your device.
Pair it with the other tools
Ask the yes/no oracle when the story needs an answer, use a dungeon room generator for places, and roll here when your rules call for dice. New to solo play? Read what a solo RPG is, or try an example adventure to see rolls, the oracle and generators working together.
Save and move your rolls
Your saved rolls and history are stored in this browser. Use Export dice data to keep a copy as a file, and Import dice data to restore it on another device.
