Which grid for which game
- Quarter-inch or 5 mm squares are the classic dungeon-mapping size. A whole dungeon fits on one sheet, and most room-by-room crawls are drawn at this scale.
- 1 cm squares are easier to draw in with a thick pencil and leave room to write a number or a short note inside each room.
- 1 inch squares match most miniatures and paper standees. Print a few sheets, tape them together and you have a battle mat for a fight.
- Dots give the same grid with less ink, so the walls you draw stand out. They also photocopy and scan more cleanly.
- Hexes are for overland travel: one hex is a day's walk, or whatever your game says. Pair them with the hex-crawl tracker.
Mapping a dungeon in solo play
Start near the middle of the sheet, not the edge: you never know which way the dungeon will grow. Draw each room as you enter it, mark doors with a small gap, and number the rooms so your notes can refer to them. Keep a pencil and an eraser: maps change when the oracle surprises you. The bold line every five squares makes counting distances quick.
Want a ready-made dungeon instead? Delve draws the rooms for you as you explore, and the battlemap handles the fights. Read how to run a solo dungeon crawl for a full method.
Printing tips
For squares that measure true, print at 100% (sometimes called Actual size), not Fit to page. Choose the same paper size here and in the print window, set margins to none (or Default), and turn off headers and footers. To keep a copy, choose Save as PDF as the printer.
