Random Tarot Card Generator

Draw a random tarot card, or three, from a full 78-card deck. Every card comes upright or reversed with a short meaning written as a prompt for stories, solo roleplaying games and journaling. The shuffle is fair, and a spread never shows the same card twice.

How the tarot card generator works

The deck has all 78 cards: the 22 cards of the Major Arcana, from The Fool to The World, and 56 cards in four suits. Wands stand for drive and ambition, cups for feelings and relationships, swords for conflict and thought, and pentacles for work, money and the body. Each draw is shuffled with your browser's secure random numbers, so every card has the same chance. With reversed cards on, each card has an even chance of landing upside down; a reversed card shows the same theme blocked, turned inward or taken too far. Turn reversals off if you prefer to read every card upright.

Three ways to use a random tarot card

  1. One card for a question. Ask something open, such as "What is waiting in the cellar?" or "What does this stranger want?", draw one card and let its meaning suggest the answer. For a plain yes or no, the yes/no oracle is faster.
  2. Three cards for a scene. The three-card draw lays out the situation, the obstacle and where it leads. Read them left to right as the beginning, middle and end of a scene, a chapter or a short story.
  3. A card for a character. Draw one card when you meet someone new. The card is what drives them; reversed, it is what they hide. Pair it with a random NPC for a name and a face.

A writing and game tool, not fortune telling

The meanings here are original prompts written for stories and games. They are not traditional divination texts, and nothing here predicts the future. If you play solo roleplaying games, the full Card Draw tool keeps a shuffled deck between draws, can deal standard playing cards too, and saves what you draw to your journal. Every card's upright and reversed prompt is listed on the card meanings page, which also prints as a cheat sheet.
