Sample AI Prompts for Solo RPG: Copy, Paste and Play
An AI helper can be a handy writing partner when you play alone. Here are prompts to copy, and rules to keep the story yours.
What an AI helper is good for here
A chat assistant can be a useful brainstorming partner when you play alone. It can suggest names, describe a room, offer three ways a scene could go or play a character who talks back. It is a poor replacement for randomness, so keep rolling dice and asking the oracle for the decisions that matter. Think of the assistant as a writing partner, not a referee.
Ground rules that keep it fun
- You decide, it suggests. Pick what you like and ignore the rest.
- Give it a short setup. Tell it the tone, the setting and how long its answers should be.
- Ask for options, not outcomes. "Give me three possibilities" keeps you in charge.
- Keep the dice and oracle in charge of luck. Tell the assistant the result you rolled and ask it to describe it.
- Do not paste private information. Treat any chat service as public.
Copy and paste prompts
Replace anything in square brackets. Each one is a starting point, so change the words freely.
Set the table
You are a brainstorming partner for my solo tabletop role-playing game. Keep every answer under 120 words. Offer ideas, never decisions. The tone is [grim / cosy / adventurous]. The setting is [short description]. Wait for my questions.
Describe a place
My character [name, one trait] enters [a place]. Describe it in three sentences using sight, sound and smell. Then list three details I could investigate.
Turn a roll into a scene
I asked my oracle whether [question] and the answer was [yes / no / yes, but / no, and]. Give me three short ways this could play out, from the most expected to the most surprising.
Make a non-player character who talks back
Play [name], a [role] who secretly wants [goal]. Answer only as this person, in two or three sentences, and never reveal the secret unless I earn it. I will start: "[first line]"
Get unstuck
My story so far: [two sentence summary]. I do not know what to do next. Ask me three questions that would help me decide.
Write the journal entry
Here are my notes from this session: [bullets]. Turn them into a short journal entry in my character's voice, first person, under 150 words.
Pair it with the free tools
Use a generated character or a tavern as the seed and ask the assistant to expand it. Roll a random event and ask what it means. Then close the chat and play. The tools on this site work without it, and your story stays yours.
One more thing
If it stops being fun, stop. The point of solo play is the quiet space it gives you, so use the assistant only as much as it helps. Not sure where to begin? Try the fifteen minute first session without it, then add it later.
